Passion Cloud - My Passions! |
Hello all!
My name is Connor Sclater and I am currently in my sixth year at Brock University, taking Bachelor of Physical Education/Bachelor of Education (Intermediate/Senior), with Mathematics as a second teachable subject.
The current Blog has been created for my "Teaching I/S Mathematics" class. The purpose of this blog is to document my Genius Hour research. I initially had two interests in mind for this project: statistics in gambling and sports statistical analysis. After thinking about which one I wanted to choose, I have decided to combine both passions for gambling and sports into one! For my Genius Hour project, I am going to be researching how statistics is and can be used in sports betting. I will start by researching how statisticians already use math to create betting in sports, which will lead into my overall Genius Hour question (outlined below).
Genius Hour Question:
How can you use math/statistics to enhance your chances of winning sports bets?
I will be making this topic applicable to an I/S school setting by teaching students about the risks of gambling and showing them that the chances of winning are not very high. My main goal for this blog is not only to gain a basic understanding of how to implement Genius Hour in an educational setting, but also to help other teachers do the same in their classrooms. Genius Hour is something that I never participated in myself as a student, and I am not very familiar with the concept. I also have a goal of becoming more familiar with statistics and how it plays a role in sports betting - maybe it will even make me a smarter sports better myself! Therefore, this will be a terrific experience for myself professionally and personally; from what I already know about Genius hour, it is something that I can foresee myself using in my classrooms in the future. I look forward to being a student in this course and to continue my journey of life-long learning!
I will be measuring my progress using this blog to format my reflections for the project. In other words, this blog will detail my progress throughout my research, as well as any additional thoughts or ideas I may come across!
